Stop taking notes in your own meetings
Watch any meeting for five minutes and you'll spot the arrangement everyone has silently agreed to: one person types, and that person isn't really there.
They're doing two jobs badly. They're missing the thing that just got said because they're writing down the thing said before it. They're not asking the question they'd have asked. And their notes — the entire justification for this arrangement — end up as a list of fragments nobody reads, because the person who wrote them was the only person in the room not paying attention.
The other version is worse. Nobody takes notes, everyone nods, and four days later two people remember the decision differently and both are certain.
What notes are actually for
Not a record of everything said. Nobody has ever wanted that. What a meeting needs to leave behind is three things:
- What got decided.
- Who's doing what.
- Enough context that you can reconstruct why, in six weeks, when you've forgotten.
Everything else is filler. And notice that none of those three require a human to type during the conversation — they require someone to understand the conversation afterwards.
The rearrangement
Let something else listen. Then read the summary after, when your only job is reading.

Two things worth saying about manners
Recording other people isn't a neutral act. Two rules we hold ourselves to, and would ask you to hold yourself to:
