What WisprBee is

WisprBee is an AI voice keyboard and notetaker for macOS. Hold one key, say the thing, let go — and finished writing lands where your cursor was, already suited to whatever is on screen: brief in Slack, properly structured in Gmail, an engineered prompt in Cursor, a filed ticket in Linear. Reading the destination first is the part that makes it a keyboard rather than a transcriber. It sits at the OS level, so the one key works in every text field on the machine, across 75 spoken languages, at roughly four times the pace of typing. In a meeting, the same key runs the built-in Notetaker: it hears the room and the call together, from your Mac, so the transcript covers everybody present without anything ever appearing in the attendee list. Away from meetings, it takes dictation as long as you care to talk.

Two things, then, from one key: it replaces typing in any text field on your Mac with speaking — handing back text you can send without editing it first — and it records your meetings from the machine rather than by joining them. What it is not is a transcription service you upload files to, or a bot that turns up in your calendar. The mechanism

What happens between the key and the paste

Five steps, in this order, every time. Written out because “we take privacy seriously” tells you nothing, and this tells you everything.

    You hold your key

    Nothing is captured until you do. WisprBee is push-to-talk: audio recording starts when the key goes down and stops when it comes up. There is no always-listening mode to turn off, because there isn't one.

  2. 02

    Your audio is transcribed

    The recording is sent over an encrypted connection to a speech-to-text model — routed via OpenRouter to an OpenAI model for English and other Latin-script languages, or a Google model for other languages. If those services are unreachable, WisprBee falls back to an on-device model so dictation still works.

  3. 03

    The raw transcript is saved first

    Before anything is cleaned up or reformatted, the exact transcript is written to your local history. Every later step is therefore reversible, and a bad polish can never cost you your words.

    The text is polished and shaped

    The transcript goes over an encrypted connection to a text model (Google, via OpenRouter) which removes filler, fixes grammar and punctuation, resolves spoken self-corrections, and formats the result for the destination profile matched from your frontmost app.

    For the Notetaker, the same pipeline runs on the call

    Meeting capture uses the same chain, with one difference at the start: it records your microphone and your Mac's system audio together, so every voice on the call is transcribed rather than only yours. Capture happens on your Mac — nothing joins the meeting — which is also why it works on any platform. Getting everyone's consent to record is your responsibility, and the rules are set out on the Notetaker page.

    It's pasted, and your clipboard is put back

    WisprBee borrows the clipboard to paste at your cursor, then restores exactly what was in it. Whatever you had copied is still there.

The macOS app, the Context Engine, the Notetaker, the backend and this website are all designed, engineered and maintained in-house by the WisprBee team. Everything published here — the FAQ, the glossary, the guides, the comparisons — is written by the same people who build the product, which is why the answers are specific rather than generic.

Where we depend on someone else, it's named rather than hidden: the speech and text models come from OpenAI and Google via OpenRouter, and payments run through Paddle. Those four are listed above, and the Privacy Policy is the authoritative version. Everything else is ours.
